Holistic Skin Care: Beauty Inside And Out

Published by Author at 11:46 am under Skin Care

When looking for the best natural organic skin care, it makes sense to take a holistic approach.  Holistic skin care not only looks at topical skin treatments but looks at diet and nutrition as well.

The skin is the largest organ in the human body.  Just as we must eat right to maintain a healthy heart, lungs and digestive system, we must eat right to have healthy, beautiful skin. Around the world people are beginning to understand the links between nutrition, health, well-being and beauty. Subsequently, good nutrition is fundamental to good holistic skin care.

Dairy Products

Low-fat dairy products are an important source of vitamin A.  Doctors know that healthy skin depends upon reliable sources of vitamin A.  Low-fat yogurt is high in vitamin A and also contains acidophilus, the good bacteria that is required for intestinal health.  And, as it turns out, a healthy intestine results in healthy skin. Healthy skin is the result we are striving for with holistic skin care.

Fruit Of The Vine

Berries, such as blueberries, blackberries and strawberries, along with some fruits like plums, are high in antioxidants.  Antioxidants and other phytochemicals in these fruits and berries protect the skin from sun exposure and damage to the membranes of the skin cells.  Other fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants and phytochemicals are artichokes, prunes, pecans and all red, black and pinto beans.  Nutritionists and doctors alike, conclude that a good holistic skin care diet will include daily portions of at least one of these fruits and vegetables.

What Else

In addition to low-fat dairy products high in vitamin A and antioxidant-loaded fruits and vegetables, most nutritionists and doctors recommend food that delivers essential fatty acids as part of a holistic skin care diet.  Essential fatty acids are responsible for healthy cell membranes.

The cell membrane holds water.  Therefore, the stronger the membrane, the more moisture is retained by the skin.  Moist, plump, cells result in younger looking skin. Omega 3 and Omega 6 are the best-known essential fatty acids.  Omega 6 is rarely in short supply in our diets, however Omega 3s are often lacking.  Add salmon, walnuts, canola oil and flax seeds to your holistic skin care diet and see and feel the results in your skin.

The basic principle of holistic skin care is that what you put on your plate is more important that what you put on your skin.
